On March 9, the ICEBERG Project will take part in an online forum organised by the European project VEEP and the “European Portal for Energy Efficiency in Buildings – EU Build Up”, in which the experiences of VEEP and two other Horizon 2020 projects in promoting circularity in the building sector will be presented.
Over the last four years, the VEEP project has developed and demonstrated a number of technological solutions for mass retrofitting of the built environment, with the aim of cost-effectively reducing the energy consumption of buildings. As proof of this, VEEP has developed the following innovative construction materials:
- A more eco-friendly and resistant silica aerogel, which is one of the best materials for insulation applications.
- New, green concrete formulations.
- Two innovative multilayer precast concrete elements (PCEs) through the smart combination of VEEP concrete, aerogel composites and innovative plastic formwork.
Moreover, VEEP has implemented Advanced Drying Recovery (ADR), a mechanical system for sorting and classifying wet construction and demolition waste according to their particle size. It also developed a heating air classification system (HAS), a technology designed to further expose fine fraction aggregates to a hot gas so as to remove moisture and destroy undesirable construction and demolition waste contaminants in a pilot plant (3 tons/hour).
Upon completion, it has organised a webinar in order to transfer this knowledge to the market under the title “Shaping a circular future for the construction sector: the experience of VEEP and other H2020 projects promoting circular economy for buildings”, co-organised with the “European Portal for Energy Efficiency in Buildings – EU Build Up” to be held on March 9.
This event is intended to be a forum for debating, sharing and exchanging experiences and knowledge, in which David García Estévez, manager of the ICEBERG Project, will also have the opportunity to briefly present the objectives, strategies and technologies to be developed and scaled up within the framework of the said project, which was launched in May 2020. Christian Glock, coordinator of the European SeRaMCo project, will also speak at the event, which will start at 11:00 am.
The ICEBERG Project aims to design, develop and validate innovative recycling systems and technologies, which will make it possible to recover high-value materials reliably with a low level of impurities (under 8%). The industrial-scale validation will be conducted by means of six case studies at different locations in Europe. They will cover the circularity of concrete, ceramics, wood, plaster, insulating foams and super-insulating materials. A further aim is to improve the reliability and acceptability of materials recycled from construction waste.
